The launch of this years Comets development squad was taken to the bush on the weekend where the outback town of Winton was treated to a recipe of high class rugby league. Playing as a curtain raiser to the Outback NSW v Outback Qld clash the Comets squad were keen to put in a show for selection in our senior squad, with a commanding performance sure to make Wayne Barnett take notice. The first half was all one sided with the visiting Comets team posting 30 unanswered points to take a strangle hold on the match. The first half was marred by the injury of three key players Caleb Littleboy (concussion), Dave McClellan (knee) and David Bradshaw (stiches). The second half saw the outback 19's mount a comeback challenge through some tireless work from secondrower Billy McConachy that resulted in his side posting 22 points to add respectability to the end result. Standouts for the travelling side were Matt Minto who amassed 28 points for the match along with young centre Joe Colin Soo showing some nice touches in a dominant display with the ball. In a weekend that spelt the dawn of a new era for the Comets organisation the result was ill in comparison to the experience our young players will take away with them from a weekend on the road together. Bonds were formed and combinations started in what spells exciting times for the future of the club. In an announcement to be held at this weeks Comets home game against Ipswich the future of Comets development is assured with the new major sponsor for the coming two seasons revealed. The direct pathway to the countries elite sporting franchise the Brisbane Broncos is proving to be a fruitful ally to keeping home grown talent in our clubs ranks until the call of first grade football presents itself. Too many young players see the bright lights too early only to fade away in the backround when the pressures mount up in the grind of professional Rugby League. This will only get stronger with the pride shown by our young boys in Winton in the mighty Comets jersey.
