Comets v Redcliffe
18th August, 2008
Dolphin Oval set the scene for a last round showdown between the travelling Central Queensland Comets and Redcliffe Dolphins. Televised live on ABC, Central Queenslanders tuned in to witness a real battle of experience and youth, with Redcliffe's charge led by the Queensland Cups most capped player in Troy Lindsay. The home side left the Comets scratching their heads as they laid on a barrage of attacking raids posting 18 points in the first 30 minutes of the match. The Comets hit back though leading into the half to give themselves a sniff with a try to bridge the gap. The second half started with the dolphins again posting first points to again gain the momentum in the early running. Stand in five eighth Palmer Wapau was instrumental barging his way over four defenders to extend his sides lead to 24 - 4.
But as they have done all year the boys from CQ stepped things up scoring three unanswered tries to make a game of it with 15 minutes left on the clock. But the margin proved too large for the visitors and the Dolphins forced their way into this years semi finals thanks also to the Souths Logan Magpies win over Burleigh. The year was one that could have been but in hindsight the positives far out way the negatives for the Comets boys as the confidence gained will be invaluable for the coming seasons. 2009 sees a team that is staying together and with interest from players outside the make up of the team for next year has very strong prospects.
A big thankyou has to go out to our boys for their on and off field conduct and coaching staff for their mammoth contribution, as well as the board for their control in all situations that lead to the re signing of coach Wayne Barnett for 2009. But the biggest thanks goes out to our sponsors who make this team available year in year out. That elusive premiership is not far away let's get behind your team CQ as we tackle Australia's 2nd best competition head on in 2009.
