Comets humbled in local derby....
13th August, 2008
Take a walk by the Rockhampton Regional Council this week and you will find an unfamiliar sight among the walls of the Council Chambers. There you will be greeted by the Mackay Regional Council flag hoisted reluctantly as homage to the agreement between the Cities to the loser of the weekend's game between the Comets and Cutters. Now dubbed an annual challenge taken up by both Mayors, it will be Rockhampton who will fly the opposition's flag first after the Comets were convincingly beaten on home soil on Saturday night. Round one of this years competition saw the Comets overcome the Cutters up in Mackay running out 18 - 12 winners, but the tide swung in the Cutters favour on this occasion and with the inclusion of several NRL experienced players the result was a different story at Browne Park. Mackay raced to an early lead in the first half amassing 22 points only to concede a late try going into the break. They didn't stop there continuing to pepper the Comets line with well executed plays and relentless kick chase defence to go on and post a confidence boosting result 46 - 22. Our boys tried hard all night under constant pressure with big George Tuakura impressing along with young gun Mitch Zornig who posted his first QLD Cup try. The final game of 08 sees the Comets travel to the graveyard, Dolphin Oval to face a side gun ho on taking some form into the finals series the following week. Set to be the ABC TV game I'm sure our boys will be primed for a big one against the QLD Cups most successful club, and hopefully take some positives out of it looking to next season.
